You have already spent a lot of time practicing. You watched the videos. Read the guides. You even went on snow to practice your J-turns. You tried garlands until your legs were too tired to do any more.
Then you looked at the tracks you made in the snow. Maybe a friend took a video of you. You saw that your back leg was still sliding on the snow. The line you made in the snow is flat in the middle where your edge did not work.
Something is not working right. You're not new to snowboarding for beginners, you can link turns. The problem is your edge angle has hit a wall. You are someone who knows what to do. Your body is not doing it.
This blog will help you with that. It talks five specific problems that show where you are losing control of your edge. It will also tell you how to fix these problems by yourself while you're on the snow.
Why You’re Not Improving
Before we dive into the symptoms let's be honest about the issue. It's usually not about how hard you try. It's not even about knowing the techniques. The problem is how you're training. There are three things that are currently working against you.
What you feel isn’t what’s happening.
When you are on a snowboard your body can lie to you. The speed you are going and how tired you are can affect how you think your board is tilted. There is something called drift in sports science. This means that as you get more tired your perception of your body position changes. For example the edge angle on your fourth run is probably not as high as it was on your first run. You just cannot feel the difference anymore because you are tired.
You’re tracking the wrong thing.
Most snowboarders think they are getting better by doing moves. They say things like I did a C-turn today. I did not fall. Doing a move and doing it correctly are two very different things. A J-turn with a low edge angle will scrape against the snow. A J-turn with a higher edge angle will cut through the snow cleanly. When you are on the mountain these two turns can look very similar. So you practice doing ten J-turns with a low edge angle thinking you are getting better at carving. You are not. You are actually getting better at skidding.

The wrong way of doing things can stick with you.
This is the bad part. Every time you use your leg to control your speed on a steep hill your brain remembers that, as what to do when you get scared. Then on your ride, you will do that move again faster and more automatically. If nobody or nothing stops you from doing that move you will get very good at doing it the wrong way.

Backside Slips, Frontside Grips Fine
When you make a turn with your heels it looks like you are sweeping the snow with a broom. When you turn with your toes you leave a straight line like a pencil mark. This means that when you turn with your heels your weight is moving backwards. Your body is trying to get away from the hill because it feels like the hill is dropping down. So your shoulders lean back. Your front leg gets straight. This makes the board tip up. You lose control of the edge. You do not even feel it happening you just see the mark on the snow and wonder what is wrong.
To fix this problem you need to understand that the edge of the board is controlled by your ankle and the weight on your foot. It is not about moving your body towards the hill. Try this on a hill. Make a turn with your heels. Put your front hand out towards the front of the board. Do it in a way until you feel your weight moving forward over the front of the board. When the edge of the board is quiet and steady that means it is working right. To check if you are doing it correctly have someone take a video of you from the side for a few seconds when you are turning with your heels. If your front shoulder is moving back towards the back of the board when you start the turn that means you are losing control of the edge.
That Weird Flat Spot Between Turns
Every time you make a turn there is a pause. The board goes completely flat for a split second. The noise changes from a cutting sound to a dull sliding noise and you are sliding instead of carving through the turn. This happens when you put both feet on the edge of the board at the same time. The board stays flat on the snow for 0.2 seconds, which is long enough to lose the carve. It might feel smooth while you are doing it. If you look at your track you will see the truth.
The key to fixing this is timing, not force. Try to split the movement into two parts: start by putting your foot on the new edge first and let it take most of your weight about 70 percent. Then your back foot follows, a bit later. It might feel strange at first like you are doing a dance move but once the front edge of the board is locked in the back of the board will follow. The best part is there will be no more flat spot. To check if you are doing it right, listen to the sound of the board. If you still hear a pitched edge sound that turns into a low-pitched sliding sound that means the flat spot is still there. If you are carving properly, the sound will stay the same all the way through the turn.
Clean on Greens, Sketchy on Blues
You can make turns on easy green slopes all day. The moment the slope gets steeper you pick up speed. Your edge starts to slip. The board goes flat the back end skids out. Suddenly you're trying to slow down fast. It's not the speed that's the problem. It's what happens when you're going fast. Your body has learned to react: steep slope means skid. It's one of the most common roadblocks in snowboarding for beginners, and it has nothing to do with effort.
To stop doing it take the skid option away. Find a slope with snow banks on both sides. Imagine a narrow path about the width of a small trail. Now you don't have room to skid. If you try to skid you'll hit the bank. The only way to control your speed is to dig your edge and make a tighter turn. The first try might feel weird. By the third try, you'll notice your edge holding through speed that usually makes you nervous. After the run, look back at your tracks. Any spot wide enough for a carve that still shows a skid means the old habit is still in control.
One Side Carves Way Better Than the Other
When you carve on your toeside the line you leave behind is really clean. It is so clean that you could put it in a picture frame. When you carve on your heelside it looks like someone else is doing it. The line is wider and not as deep. It is also messy. This usually happens because one side of your body is more coordinated than the other. If you have been skateboarding or surfing for a while you might have developed a stronger connection between your brain and body on one side. This is because you have used that side often.
You are not bad at carving on your heelside. You just need to practice more on that side. So try this: go down the hill and make ten turns on your edge. Do not switch to your strong edge. Just focus on tilting your ankle and driving your knee forward on that weak side. Do not worry about how good your turns look. Just see if you can make them all the same depth. When you get to the bottom look at the lines you made on your toeside and heelside. If one line is really thin and the other line is really wide that means you are not using your edges evenly. This is not a feeling. You can see it in the lines you made.

You Might Be Better, But You Can’t Prove It
You read about the first four symptoms and maybe one of them bothered you a little. Maybe you are not really sure because you are trying to remember how you felt when you were snowboarding three days ago. The main problem with learning to snowboard by yourself is that you cannot really trust how you feel about your riding. When we look at sports science and how our bodies know where they are we see that there is a difference between what we think we are doing and what we are actually doing. You can finish a run thinking you did a really great job, but you might be totally wrong.

The solution is not to find a coach who will follow you around all day. It is to find your baseline, which is a number that shows how well you were snowboarding last week so you can compare it to how you are doing this week.
